What is a Parlormaid?

In Victorian and Edwardian England, wealthy members of society employed a strict hierarchy of household staff. In English manor houses, owned by the wealthiest tier of British society, a parlour-maid assisted in preparing the dinner table for the owner and his family. She did not cook the food, but simply set the elaborate tables for meals and assisted the footmen with serving duties. She also attended to the family and their guests between meals in the parlour, ensuring their absolute comfort. Thus the title, “parlour-maid.”
